Southampton have agreed a Sh 1.3 billion (£10million) fee with Celtic for Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama but the player says he is yet to agree personal terms with the English club which will make him the first Kenyan to play in the English Premier League.
Wanyama, who is on holiday until July 10, says he has not been contacted by Southampton but alluded to the fact that the club has severally tried to get his signature.
“I am on holiday, I am only hearing this from the media but I can say the deal is far from being complete. Yes, my club has agreed terms with Southampton, but I will also have to agree to terms before I consider myself a Saint,” said Wanyama who was recently installed as captain of Kenya national football team.
According to a report on British newspaper Daily Mail, Southampton made a bid that Scottish side has accepted and what remains is for the player to agree terms and move to the lucrative English Premier League.
Wanyama’s position opens the doors for more clubs to increase their bid for the 21-year-old who has become one of Celtic’s top players since joining the Scottish champions from Belgian club Germinal Beerschot for just £900,000 two years ago.
The Saints are among a number of clubs interested in Wanyama – including Arsenal, Liverpool and Inter Milan.
But Wanyama only has one year left on his contract and Celtic know they have little choice but to accept a hefty profit and let him leave.
The Scottish club had offered Wanyama an improved deal to stay but the player has insisted he wants to move on.
Wanyama has been key to coach Neil Lennon since joining the Scottish giants at the start of last season.
He became the first East African player to score a goal in the UEFA Champions League when he netted the second goal in the 2-0 win over Swedish side Helsingborgs. He went on to score again against Spanish giants Barcelona in the Champions League.
