Kethi Kilonzo Disqualified |
Nairobi Kenya: Kethi Kilonzo will not be on the ballot for the July 22 Makueni senatorial by-election, because she is not a registered voter.
The IEBC Tribunal has ruled that Kethi’s name does not exist in the
voter register anywhere in the country and revoked a nomination
certificate issued by the Makueni Returning Officer Salad Boru.
“The first respondent didn’t seem to know the physical location of
the registration centre where she went to register as a voter; even if
it was indeed assumed that she indeed presented her self for voter
registration it is clear by dint of Regulation 3, 3(a) 3 (b) of the
Election Regulation and Registration of Voters Regulation the first
respondent would not have been validly registered as a voter since by
her own admission she didn’t have her original ID card or passport,”
Letangule said.
Tribunal chairman Thomas Letangule says it was clear that Kethi’s
documents with which she claims to have registered as a voter could not
have been valid, as they were photocopies.
The lawyer for the Wiper Democratic Movement Tom Kajwang has however
said they will move to the High Court to block the revocation of Kethi’s
nomination as ordered by the IEBC.
