Wednesday evening will always be etched in his memory in his five and a half years in the media because this is the fateful day that Eric Njoka lost his job at the Standard Group. The 27 years old outgoing reporter and anchor was shown the door by his employersomething that left tongues wagging among his former immediate colleagues.
According to an insider at the Mombasa Road-based media house, Njoka
was allegedly fired for "indecent behaviour on live TV". Evidently, last
night, Linda Oguttu with whom Njoka used to read the prime time
bulletin, was alone, clear signs that Njoka had been axed.
In April, Njoka with fellow anchor Betty Kyalo laughed out loud at a
story was about a Nyeri woman who had been stripped down at a bus
station for 'inappropriate dressing'. However, the two apologized for
the mistake on soical media after a section of Kenyans were not amused
by their reaction to the story.
Linda Ogutu and Njoka |
The Catholic University alumnus started his career as an intern at
K24 in 2008 where he worked as a reporter for four months before the
head of news at the time requested him to do a screen test, and that's
when his journey as an anchor began. He was later poached by Chinese
media dragon, CCTV, but didn't stay there for long when Standard Group
came calling.
Though dismissed suddenly and quite ruthlessly, Njoka remained upbeat even as he cleared his desk.
