Wayne Rooney For Chelsea: Chelsea FC Tells Manchester United To Name A Price For Rooney

Chelsea want Manchester United to name their price for Wayne Rooney.
Sunday Mirror Sport can reveal Chelsea are refusing to be put off by United’s public insistence Rooney will not be sold.
Sources close to Chelsea claim Roman Abramovich would be prepared to splash out over £30million for Rooney and match his £250,000-a-week United salary. It is believed Abramovich is determined not to be outbid by Paris Saint-Germain for Rooney and will blow any interest from Arsenal out of the water.
New United manager David Moyes has made Rooney’s future his top priority and will soon speak to the 27-year-old at Old Trafford.

Those talks may well decide whether or not Abramovich gets his man. Jose Mourinho is expected to return to the Blues for a second spell as manager and the Portuguese is a big fan of Rooney.
A source told Sunday Mirror Sport: “Chelsea want to make sure that if Wayne leaves United, there is only one place he will go.
“They are prepared to spend, big, big money on Rooney and they have told United that.
“Mourinho would love to manage Rooney. He thinks he can get him back to his best and use him in a similar way to how Didier Drogba operated for Chelsea.”
Mourinho’s advisers are this week due to hold talks with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.
They want to find a compromise over who will pay the compensation fee to allow Mourinho to return to Chelsea.
It is understood Mourinho may be willing to pay part of the £17m compensation to free himself.
Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho has been told Cristiano Ronaldo will not be joining him at Chelsea.

How The World Has Reacted To Beckham's Retirement News

David Beckham announced his retirement from professional football on Thursday, after a memorable career in which he won league titles in four different countries and played at three World Cups.

Here, AFP Sports looks at how the world has reacted to news of his retirement, which will come into effect after Paris Saint-Germain's final game of the season at Lorient on May 26:

"Best wishes as David Beckham retires. His magical free-kicks for MUFC and England will live long in the memory of all football fans." - British Prime Minister David Cameron

"It's the end of a chapter of an amazing story. David grew up as a football loving child and achieved his dreams, and unquestionably inspired millions of boys and girls to try and do the same."- Fifa president Sepp Blatter

"I am sad that he is retiring. I would have liked him to continue for another year with us. It has been a great privilege for me and PSG that we were his last club." - Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi

"He played in the greatest midfield I've ever played with: David, Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes. David was a crosser of the ball, a passer of the ball. He had incredible stamina and energy. He was a joy to play with." - former Manchester United teammate and close friend Gary Neville

"He is an iconic figure in the game and produced wonderful performances for his clubs, particularly Manchester United. He is a real loss to the game and I am sure the FA will want to embrace him and to get him closely associated with the organisation." - Football Association chairman David Bernstein

"A fantastic football player, a fantastic man; probably the biggest sports personality in the world. If you talk about David Beckham, all over the world they know who that it is." - Former England manager Sven Goran-Eriksson

"David Beckham has retired. A wonderful player, global superstar and a magnificent ambassador for England and football." - former England striker Gary Lineker

"David is a man of many talents and a lot of people now will be wanting him for different jobs and roles, some of which could take him away from us in football. But I'm rather hoping we'll be able to keep him in football because we can really benefit from his experience, we can really benefit from his charisma and we certainly benefit from the magnificent past he has had as a football player." - England manager Roy Hodgson

"It is impossible to think about the success of the London 2012 Games and not reflect upon the extraordinary commitment made by David Beckham. At every stage of the London 2012 journey – from the bid phase, to planning for the Games, to the torch relay and the unforgettable summer of sport in 2012 – David was a constant source of support and inspiration." - British Olympic Association chairman Sebastian Coe

"He adds an incredible intensity. He brought the focus to play each and every game. He taught our young players the little things you need to do to win games. He was an important part of the LA Galaxy being champions. I've never seen a player with his ability." - former Los Angeles Galaxy coach Bruce Arena

"He has been very special in that right midfield position. He was an unbelievable passer, crosser of the ball, and he could score goals as well. My lasting memory of David Beckham is him continuously being the last off the training pitch and always practising those trademark free-kicks." - former England manager Steve McClaren

"He came over to put MLS (Major League Soccer) on the map. That's really what David did. He was one of those few athletes that transcended the game. He was a global icon by that stage. People around the world heard of MLS because of David Beckham." - American former Premier League goalkeeper Kasey Keller

"Thanks for everything, Becks. You're a true legend." - Major League Soccer

"A great professional, a brilliant player. I wish him luck in whatever he goes on to do next. I'm sure he will enjoy success because he is a very intelligent man." - Diego Simeone, who was on the receiving end of the infamous kick that led to Beckham being sent off in the 1998 World Cup match between England and Argentina

"David Beckham you cannot be serious!!!" - Former tennis star John McEnroe

"We will miss you David Beckham." - Serena Williams

"He is incredible. He was always a big star on the pitch and off it. He has all my respect and admiration." - Tennis star, and Real Madrid fan, Rafael Nadal

Neymar Named World’s Most Marketable Athlete Ahead Of Messi, Bolt, Woods

The Brazilian forward, is number one ahead of superstars like Lionel Messi, Tiger Woods, Usain Bolt and Lewis Hamilton, in the list of 50 compiled by SportsPro magazine.
Neymar
David Cushnan, SportsPro editor-in-chief, explained why the 21-year-old tops the list.

“Essentially the crux of it is we are trying to predict marketing value over the next three years. We’re trying to forecast who is going to be worth investing from a sponsorship point of view but also who perhaps offers real value for money.

“Our feeling is that Neymar has the World Cup coming up next year, where he’s going to be the star at home, he’s a megastar in Brazil.

“He still has this big move to come, probably to Barcelona, that will launch him to whole new level of fame. And there is no doubt that Messi is the more talented player but you can make the argument he is not particularly charismatic off the pitch, not animated or confident in front of the camera.

“You can’t ignore him but when it comes to marketing our conclusion was Neymar. From a marketability and brand appeal point of view, if you’re picking someone for three years he’s the guy.”

SPORTSPRO’S TOP 50 MOST MARKETABLE ATHLETES Sportspro take the following into account when compiling the list: Value for money, age, home market, charisma, willingness to be marketed and crossover appeal.

Kenya's Victor Mugubi Wanyama Voted Scottish Young Player Of The Year: Congratulations Brother

Victor Wanyama
Kenyan international midfielder Victor Wanyama of Scottish club, Celtic, on Monday evening added the Clydesdale Bank Young Player of the Season award to his ever growing list of accolades this season.

By winning bagging the coveted title, barely a fortnight after winning a similar award at club level, the combative holding midfielder wraps up the season as one of the most decorated player in the Hoops’ squad.

According to Sports TV, the Kenyan international, who is in his second year with the Scottish champions, failed to win a monthly award in the league this campaign but was been recognized for his consistent performances in the course of the Scottish Premier League campaign.
Wanyama joins Motherwell boss, Stuart McCall, and Hibernian’s Leigh Griffiths in winning the annual awards, with the pair having been named as Manager and Player of the Season respectively.

The 21 year old had been nominated for the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year Award, but lost out to Griffiths in the union’s prize.

Historic win
Wanyama has made 49 appearances for Celtic this season, and scored in his side’s historic 2-1 home win over Barcelona in the UEFA Champions’ League group stage match.
The former Germinal Beerschot and Nairobi City Stars player, whose style of play has been linked to that of on-loan Real Madrid midfielder and Ghana international, Michael Essien, has become a household name in Europe owing to his impeccable performance this season.

The player has been linked with several top clubs in Europe despite having a year left in his contract.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger tops the list of elite club managers that have expressed interest for his services, with Serie A champions Juventus also reported to be interested.

Football Kenya Federation chairman Sam Nyamweya, yesterday lauded the player for his achievement.

“Wanyama’s selection as Scottish Young Player of the Year is a joyous development for Kenyan football. To see one of our own feted in a very competitive league is a great honour,” Nyamweya said.

“The selection was no real surprise to us here as Wanyama has always been the epitome of professionalism, whether playing for his club side Celtic or donning national colours for the Harambee Stars. His dedication and commitment to positive results has been consistent with his game. We are very happy for him,” Nyamweya added.

Now a prized asset in Neil Lennon’s squad, Wanyama’s journey to the top has been no walk in the park. His growth has been marred by great challenges, but resilience and will seems to have kept the son of Noah Wanyama, a former AFC Leopards and Harambee Stars great focused in his game.

Final Scores: Chelsea 1 Manchester United 0 - The Official Match Report

Manchester United were beaten by a Chelsea side chasing a top-four spot as the champions conceded a late winner to Juan Mata.

It was the first time the Reds failed to score in a home league game since December 2009, against Aston Villa, and the hosts ended a clash that often lacked any real intensity with 10 men after Howard Webb decided to flash a red card at Rafael in the closing stages.

Sir Alex Ferguson handed a chance in midfield to Tom Cleverley and Anderson and the Brazilian made an early impact inside the opening couple of minutes by imposing himself on the proceedings. However, the Blues created the first chances with Demba Ba backpedalling to head a Juan Mata cross off target under no pressure and Rafael making an important block when Ba looked to profit from another Mata centre, which Anders Lindegaard could only paw at.

Rafael was soon up at the other end, beating Ashley Cole and seeing his cross squirt out of Petr Cech's grasp before being cleared to safety. Cleverley then swept well wide after an intelligent chested lay-off by Robin van Persie but Chelsea had the best effort of the half in the 14th minute. A mistake by Patrice Evra high up the pitch granted Oscar the freedom of the flank to latch onto Frank Lampard pass and accelerate forward. As he continued unchecked, it needed Lindegaard to push the Brazilian's shot onto an upright.

There were plenty of shots on goal but most of them lacked any real threat. Ryan Giggs rolled an effort at Cech following snappy passes by Rafael and Anderson while Victor Moses blasted over when a Phil Jones slip presented the ball to Ramires and he, in turn, fed Mata. Lampard and Ba also had attempts and United almost carved out a rare clear sight of goal when Cleverley's pass released van Persie but his drive was blocked by Cesar Azpilicueta.

Cleverley chanced his arm himself but sent a wasteful shot rising into the East Stand after Cech punched out a Giggs cross following some impressive industry by Anderson, who was performing well in patches. Giggs was again involved when placing a through ball beyond Branislav Ivanovic for van Persie but the lone striker's first-time shot bounced a foot wide.

After Oscar's ambitious drive fizzed past Lindegaard but also beyond the far post, United finished the first half strongly. Giggs stabbed an awkward left-footed volley off target from an Antonio Valencia centre and van Persie had a header saved after Nemanja Vidic popped up in the left-wing position, galloping onto a fancy flick by Evra.

Chelsea felt there was controversy at the start of the second period when referee Webb felt Giggs had not fouled David Luiz with replays proving any offence took place outside of the area, in any case. The Reds were reduced to largely playing on the break but should have done much better from one such raid when Jones misplaced a cross after Anderson put

Mata escaped Giggs to nudge the ball into Lampard's path but the veteran skied over the bar and Vidic had to stylishly cover for Jones after the midfielder was caught napping by Ba as the greater threat was posed by Rafa Benitez's men.

In the 67th minute, Mata threw himself to the ground to win a cheap free-kick out of Evra which ultimately led to Vidic making a vital headed clearance and Sir Alex decided it was time to introduce Wayne Rooney into the fray, with Alexander Büttner also appearing in a double change for Anderson and Cleverley.

Büttner moved into an attacking left-sided position with Rooney offering more support to the isolated van Persie. Rooney was soon into the thick of things and misdirected a header, off balance, following a cross by Valencia as the Reds tried to build some momentum.

However, Chelsea kept pressing and Mata was close to meeting Lampard's ball into the box and three corners in succession were defended capably. As the game entered the final 10 minutes, Rafael's run led to Ivanovic going close to putting through his own net but any thoughts that the Londoners would tire after their recent fixture congestion were looking unfounded.

Evra's shove on Mata produced another free-kick in a similar position to earlier in the half and Luiz clubbed the dead-ball into the crowd but the winner was just around the corner.  Referee Webb failed to whistle when Rooney was toppled over by Ramires and the Brazilian was heavily involved in the move that led to Mata finding himself in space inside the area. The Spaniard's shot took a touch off Jones and crept in at the far post.

Rafael was dismissed with two minutes left after kicking Luiz - becoming the first Red to be sent off in the Barclays Premier League this season. It looked a harsh decision by Webb but it left the Reds a man light and forced into accepting a rare home reverse.
